A very important company in Montalcino, that of Col d’Orcia is a story that has its roots in the nineteenth century. In fact, the purchase of the property by the Franceschi family, originally from Florence, dates back to 1890, the one that gave the first and fundamental impulse to the already started production of Brunello. The next turning point came in 1973, when the Piedmontese Cinzano took over the entire property and used their already extensive liquor sales network to increase sales of the wines of the Tuscan estate. Today, more than a century later, Col d’Orcia is the third producer by volume of the entire denomination, the first in Tuscany by extension of vineyards cultivated according to the dictates of organic farming.

Despite these important numbers, Col d’Orcia is able to produce an consistently excellent production of great quality not only in its "Poggio al Vento", one of the best Brunellos in all of Montalcino, but also and above all in the entire remaining line. The scenario is that of the southern area of the Montalcino area: this is where the 540 hectares owned by the company meet, of which just under 150 are currently under vines. In a microclimate protected by Monte Amiata and mitigated by sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the rows host both native varieties, such as Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Moscadello di Montalcino, as well as international grapes, such as cabernet, merlot, pinot grigio, chardonnay , petit verdot and syrah. Bunches that are processed in the cellar with rigor and method: after careful selection, fermentation follows with maceration on the skins, in steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Subsequently, the aging takes place in Slavonian oak barrels and in French oak barriques, where the wine can mature up to four years. That's it: no secrets and no shortcuts, for those that are extremely elegant wines, of intrinsic nobility, among other things always characterized by an unsurpassed quality / price ratio.
